Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

(AP English Literature)

Requirements:

  • Complete the reading of the book before the first day of school, August 15th.. .
  • As you read, choose the most significant quotations that show character development, illuminate a conflict, identify setting, or contribute to the plot. Begin your entries midway through the book, once you have a good understanding of most characters and their interactions.
  • Copy down the quotations into a college-ruled notebook; center the quotes on the page so that there is enough room for annotations. You can also type and print out the quotations and paste them to the page, but please do not type your responses to the quotes – those need to be handwritten.
  • The quotations can be between 5 to 10 lines each; leave enough space between quotes for responses;
  • Number each entry and each quotation; for full credit, you need to have completed 5 passage annotations total, at least one from each entry (see below). In summary, you should have annotations from every part of the novel, including the ending.
    • Need to review T.H.A.W. annotations? See Annotation at Ortho to review guidelines and see samples.
  • Your annotations should be completed with insight, accuracy, and critical thought. Your comments need to prove sophistication of thought, proper engagement with the text, and an evident understanding of its meanings.
  • The entries need to be selected from the following sections of the novel:

For all 10th Grade: Personal Choice Novel

For all 11th Grade: The Glass Castle

For regular 12th Grade: The Alchemist

Read a Novel of Personal Choice.

There is no written work required.

Entry 1: Parts I and II

Entry 2: Part III

Entry 3: Part IV

AP English Language students will complete 12 passage-annotation exercises, 4 for each entry listed above.

The book is divided into Part I and Part II only. Choose quotations from any part of the book that you find significant.

AP English Literature students will read Jane Eyre. To review Ms. Ciuperca’s assignment, see the assignment handout.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Some teachers use the reading book as the basis for all assignments during your first 2 weeks of school. Failing to read the book may put you back in your grade severely. Read the book!
