Term
2020-2021 School Year
Description
This is an Honors English class for ninth grade students.  Our primary focus in this class will be on non-fiction communication, which will include a variety of essays, video blogs, oral presentations (some recorded), and the use of visual aids.  In non-fiction we will take a look at bias in the media and its effect on persuasive works, proper research methods, source citations, and the development of effective visual aids.  We will investigate 21st century communication tools and start to build students' digital portfolios and enhance their digital footprint in the world.  Planned research projects include advanced medical technology, current events, and financial literacy.

Students will read a variety of classic books, poems, and plays including Of Mice and Men, The Old Man and the Sea, The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet.  Other fictional works covered are by immigrants, women, and people of divergent ethnic backgrounds.  This class will analyze literature through the lens of character, focusing on six dimensions of character and how they drive story.

Because this year students will begin the Fall semester from home, students are expected to utilize Zoom to access live sessions and participate in class discussions.  Homework will consist of preparing, practicing, and recording oral presentations, reading texts, and research.

There are no tests in this class. Students are expected to complete all assigned tasks, including revisions of essays and preparation of oral arguments or presentations.  I am always available for parents, and check my email regularly throughout the day and at night.  Students and parents should feel free to contact me with any questions or comments they feel are important.  I will do my best to get back to you quickly, usually within 24 hours.  Please be patient if I take a little longer, but feel free to follow up if I do not respond within three working days.

I look forward to working with you this year as we navigate the unprecedented challenges we face heading into the 2020-2021 school year.

Medical Technology Presentation

Students will record an informational presentation about an advanced medical technology or procedure of their choosing.  Students must create dynamic visual aids (in the form of a slide show) and record audio over their slides so that the presentations can be viewed asynchronously.  Presentations will be posted on flipgrid.com, and submitted to Schoology.  This is their first entry into their digital portfolio and will create a benchmark against which they can measure their academic growth while at Ortho.
